Life back in the real world

Well, it's back to work. Been jet-lagged forever it seems like - I hate jetlag. Tuesday I was running on pure adrenalin - I got home at 11 pm on Monday night, starving hungry with a take-away curry in hand. Consequently I didn't get to sleep until around 1.30, and then was up again at 6.30. I was supposed to have my appraisal on Tuesday morning, but I had forgotten to complete my self assessment in the panic the last day of work before I left, and so it was postponed.

Now, I actually really love my job, still, even after 2 and a half months, and things SEEM to be going really well. However, Tuesday was the one year anniversary of me getting fired from American Express for, according to them, being as useful as a chocolate teapot. Needless to say, I was pretty nervous going into my appraisal yesterday morning. However, the worry was unfounded, and it all went really well. And what I love most about it is one of the things which they hated me doing at Amex is seen as a big plus here. I "ask questions, and constantly challenge everything we do", which Amex thought was dreadful - they are awful for the "we have always done it this way, so shut up" way of thinking. And I am not the sort of person to accept that - I want to know the why, and what else we tried and if it wasn't better then why not. Anyway, I didn't get an outstanding grade - who does after only 2 and a half months in the job? It is stupid really - how can anyone judge just how good I am going to be in that time? But it seems I am on track, and as long as I still love my job, I expect it to carry on that way.

Even better was me asking my boss in the review where she thought I would be in bonus terms. She said she is not allowed to tell me, that I will find out in January/February after all the meetings they have to have to ensure every grade is aligned, but "off the record" I was high middle. She then said that no-one else in the team has had the nerve to ask. Whoops! But then that got even better, because she said she was going to ask her boss as well, and it would be interesting to see what his response was.

Also at work, the rest of my team all have decorations around their desks. And me and eye-candy have been forgotten yet again. I was complaining about it to him, so we made our own decoration. Consisting of a 5 inch strip of paper, with hand drawn holly in red pen on each end of it, hanging over the desk divider. Then eye candy got very creative, and wanted some red paper. I got a packet of crisps out of my bin, and passed them to him, along with a pair of scissors. Then, while I was looking at my pc, out of the corner of my eye, I see movement over the divider. Well, I almost wet myself. I was laughing so hard I was crying. Eye candy had cut the corner off the crisp packet to make a Santa hat for his banana (oo-er missus) and drawn a face on it. And was dancing it along the divider.

Even better, was at lunch yesterday, there we five of us in the canteen. I was one end, Eye candy was the other. In the middle of a conversation, I caught sight of the fact that Eye candy had a banana as part of his lunch again, and just gave a little smile to myself. Well, he caught me looking, and almost (I say almost) succeeded in embarrassing me by winking along the table and saying "You're thinking of Santa aren't you?" Everyone else had no idea why I collapsed into hysterics. And it really doesn't translate well in the telling.

I also tried to tell them about Porny Seany who I used to work with and our "One finger one thumb keep moving" game which we used to play almost daily at work.......
